Local food bank helps provide fresh produce, like milk, to 125,000 people in need
MADISON, Wisconsin – Milk is one of the most requested items in local pantries and often one of the hardest to find. Yes, even in ‘America’s Dairyland.’
This is why Second Harvest Foodbank has launched its ‘Adopt-a-Dairy-Cow’ campaign: to buy fresh, local milk directly from local dairy farmers since 2015.
âIt helps the people we serve, but also these farmers,â said Kris Tazelaar, communications manager for Second Harvest. âThey work hard every day.
Here’s how the program works: You choose a cow to âadoptâ from the program’s website, then decide how many gallons of milk you want to provide. Your donation will help Second Harvest deliver a nutrient-dense product rarely given to people in need of food in southwestern Wisconsin.

Like many food banks across the country, Second Harvest continues to see increased demand for its services. The nonprofit organization currently helps about 125,000 people in 16 counties in Wisconsin, more than 20,000 from before the pandemic.
Tazelaar hopes this weekend’s fair will help meet this additional need.
âFor every $ 10 that comes in, we can provide 25 meals,â he said. “You do the math. It’s pretty efficient!
