Students at Wirral Met College got a glimpse of a construction site “live” thanks to GMI Construction and Peel L&P.

Wirral Met plumbing and electrical students visited the Hythe in Wirral Waters and ascended to the highest point of the building.

Wirral Met plumbing and electrical students toured Hythe, a new sustainable business center in the growing Four Bridges neighborhood. Located adjacent to the college’s Wirral Waters construction campus, Hythe will offer Class A office space when it is completed in December 2021.

With completion imminent, the site tour gave construction students a glimpse of the 2,330 square meter building, which has now reached its highest point of 15.3m. The plumbing students saw the building’s supercharged cold water system and discussed the process, from installation planning to testing, maintenance and troubleshooting. Electrical students were shown various installation methods for commercial constructions and how to inspect and test the electrical system.

Wirral Met plumbing and electrical students toured the Hythe at Wirral Waters.

Students first visited the site in April 2021 to see the early stages of construction. Since then, students have participated in a number of site visits and virtual sessions with Peel L&P, GMI and Glenn Howells Architects to learn more about the new sustainable office building, as well as to develop their skills in employability, including how to approach potential employers. and how to network effectively within the industry.

Working in partnership with Peel L&P and GMI, Wirral Met construction students have the opportunity to participate in internships, apprenticeships, employment opportunities and site visits through the Wirral Waters Regeneration Project to prepare them to a future job.

Anthony Judge, Director of Construction at GMI Construction, said: “We are really delighted to welcome students from Wirral Met College to our site in Hythe. At GMI, we recognize the importance of giving young people a real world experience and investing in the next wave of construction talent.

“We are delighted to partner with Wirral Met to provide these opportunities as part of our social value commitment to the region. This bond is already bearing fruit with two carpentry students working on this project through our dedicated supply chain partners and another two alumni through the government’s Kickstart program. “

Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Wirral Waters at Peel L&P, said: “Peel L&P’s commitment from day one was to foster these links between Wirral Waters and our education partner FE Wirral Met College. This is particularly relevant for construction. With on-site delivery progressing at pace at Wirral Waters, there is a range of learning experiences we can offer at the College. Hythe is just the latest project in our strategic partnership with Wirral Met College which, along with our construction partners, will lead to training, work experience and learning opportunities. “

Sue Higginson, Director and CEO of Wirral Met College, said: “Our Wirral Waters campus is a world-class facility for teaching the next generation of construction professionals. All of our young students have real work experience as part of their study program and it shows what a difference it makes.

“We would like to thank GMI and Peel L&P for another fantastic opportunity to engage our students and provide them with opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills, while helping them play a role in regenerating their own community.”
